Hunger-Free PA to Stop in Northampton County during Statewide Road Show for Anti-Hunger Initiative

Updated June 27, 2019

NAZARETH, Northampton County (June 25, 2019) --- Hunger-Free Pennsylvania (HFPA), the single largest provider of meals to older Pennsylvanians, is going on a road show to showcase the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP). CSFP has been a centerpiece of efforts to improve the health of low-income elderly people by supplementing their diets with nutritious food packages. In Pennsylvania, 36,200 utilize CSFP and more than 3,800 seniors are on the waiting list at any given time. More than 2,300 seniors from Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe, Pike, Wayne and Northampton Counties receive CSFP packages of nutritious USDA Foods each month from Second Harvest Food Bank.

HFPA Executive Director Sheila Christopher and HFPA Assistant Director Thomas Dubs will visit Second Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley & NEPA at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 25 to inspect the program and ensure compliance as part of its Federal Regulation §247.34 – Management Review. The visit also enables Hunger-Free Pennsylvania leaders to check in with local staff and recipients, share stories, ask questions, and review important guidelines for nutrition education, civil rights compliance, food storage practices, and financial management systems.

“These stops are the best way to support local programs in their fight against hunger and learn more about ways we can help in their community,” said Christopher, who has been an anti-hunger champion for 35 years. “With more 1.7 million Pennsylvanians facing food insecurity, this road trip cuts through the bureaucracy to make this system personal and effective.”
